What does it mean to earn the Silver Oakleaf? So few men have done so. For Will, a mere boy, that symbol of honor has long felt out of reach. Now, in the wake of Araluenas uneasy truce with the raiding Skandians comes word that the Skandian leader has been captured by a dangerous desert tribe. The Rangers are sent to free him. But the desert is like nothing these warriors have seen before. Strangers in a strange land, they are brutalized by sandstorms, beaten by the unrelenting heat, tricked by one tribe that plays by its own rules, and surprisingly befriended by another. Like a desert mirage, nothing is as it seems. Yet one thing is constant: the bravery of the Rangers. In this red-hot adventure, winner of the Australian Book of the Year Award for Older Children, John Flanagan raises the stakes.

Young mateys will find plenty of holiday joy in this humorous, colorful, and thoroughly piratical version of the beloved Clement C. Moore classic. On this ship of mischievous brigands--who have visions of treasure chests, not sugarplums, dancing in their heads--you wouldn't expect a visit from nice St. Nick. Instead, here comes Sir Peggedy, with his peg leg and hook arm, cracking his whip and driving eight giant seahorses: Salty, Scurvy, Sinbad, Mollie, Cutthroat, Cross-Eyes, Roger, and Jolly. Philip Yates' rollicking rhymes and Sebastia Serra's sprightly, fun-filled pictures--featuring whimsically multicolored seahorses, stockings hung on the ship's bowsprit with tar, child-friendly pirates, and a complete treasure map--turn this Christmas perennial into a jubilant celebration.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a Wizarding classic, first came to Muggle readers' attention in the book known as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now, thanks to Hermione Granger's new translation from the ancient runes, we present this stunning edition with an introduction, notes, and pen-and-ink illustrations by J. K. Rowling, and extensive commentary by Albus Dumbledore revealing his vast knowledge of Wizarding lore, and his personal qualities: his sense of humor, courage, pride in his abilities, and hard-won wisdom.

This purchase also represents another very important form of giving: From every sale of this book, Scholastic will give its net proceeds to the CHILDREN'S HIGH LEVEL GROUP, a charity cofounded in 2005 by J.K. Rowling and Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne, MEP. CHLG campaigns to protect and promote children's rights and make life better for vulnerable young people across Europe, where over a million children and teenagers are growing up in unacceptable conditions in large residential institutions. In most cases they are without adequate human or emotional contact and stimulation, while many only just survive without life's basics such as adequate shelter and food. Emma Nicholson says: "We are so thrilled to be publishing such an exclusive and special book. This unique project will raise vital funds for the work of CHLG, to help us change the lives of hundreds of thousands of marginalised and institutionalised children who are living in appalling conditions, and make sure that no future generation suffers in this way."

"Call me Ishmael." Three of the most famous words in all literature, they begin Herman Melville's masterpiece, "Moby-Dick," Now, the epic saga of Captain Ahab's obsessive quest for the white whale comes vividly to life in this three-dimensional graphic novel, the first of its kind. This phenomenal work is the creation of multi-talented artist Sam Ita, apprentice to Robert Sabuda--one of the world's master paper engineers. Every amazing element is awe-inspiring: there's not just one pop-up per spread, but several, surrounded by colorful comic book-style panels that convey the story's drama. Some of the pops-ups are huge and incredibly detailed, like the Pequod itself, which rises gloriously from the page, complete with rigging. Others, smaller but no less wonderful, hide beneath flaps and folds. In one instance, readers actually get to look through a 3-D periscope and see Ishmael through the "lens," drifting in the ocean. The quality of Ita's paper engineering is nothing short of breathtaking and will carry you off on an unforgettable adventure.

This story takes place in Lawrence, Massachusetts and in Barre, Vermont during the mill workers strike of 1912 which became known as the Bread and Roses Strike of 1912. The story is told from a young girls perspective. Rosa is in the middle of both sides of the conflict. She understands her mom's and sister's fight for better conditions but she also respects her teacher's position that the strike won't help people and that the strikers are misinformed about the mill owners. She fears the repercussions especially when a woman is killed.

Having grown up in Lawrence, Massachusetts, we (Janet and Joanne) could picture all the places in the book. Our grandparents worked in the mills and benefitted from the ideals the strikers fought for. We really thought the book did an excellent job of informing the reader about the Bread and Roses Strike. We had been unaware before this book that friendly union supporters had taken the children into their homes and we thank these people for being a part of our heritage.

No one on the plantation had ever heard the Old African's voice, yet he had spoken to all of them in their minds. Based on legend and infused with magical realism, this haunting tale is beautiful in both its language and its images. Julius Lester and Jerry Pinkney have found a new, extraordinary way to express the horrors of slavery and the hope and strength that managed to overcome its grip.

He will stop at nothing, and as a shadowmancer--a sorcerer who speaks to the dead--he even commands restless souls to do his bidding. Who will stand against him? And there's never been a villain quite like Gulo the Savage: a vicious beast-eating wolverine who descends upon the Abbey in Search of a relic called the Walking Stone.
