Juneteenth, first recognized as a national holiday in 2021, celebrates June 19, 1865, the date when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to free the remaining enslaved people in the United States. It is also often observed for celebrating African-American culture. It has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1865.
